FREE QUILTING CALCULATOR

Backing calculator

Compare fabric layouts and give your quilt the backing it needs.

How we plan your backing

We add your margin to all four sides, then compare panels running vertically or horizontally. Every seam between panels uses fabric on both sides. Automatic layout chooses the shorter fabric length; select a direction if your fabric has a directional print.

Backing size = quilt size + (2 × margin)

Fabric width means usable width after removing selvages. Confirm your longarm quilter’s margin requirements and add fabric for shrinkage or pattern matching when needed.

A few things to know

Is the backing margin added on every side?

Yes. A 4-inch margin adds 8 inches to each quilt dimension. Ask your quilter for their required margin rather than treating the default as a universal rule.

How are backing seams included?

Each join consumes the seam allowance on both panels. For n panels, the covered span is n times the usable fabric width, minus n minus 1 joins times twice the seam allowance.

Should I always choose the layout with less yardage?

Check the print direction, fabric grain, and your quilter's requirements first. Automatic selection compares rectangular layouts by fabric length; it cannot decide how a directional design should face.

Can I use scraps or match a large print repeat?

The estimate uses equal-width rectangular panels from yardage. Scrappy layouts, print-repeat matching, and shrinkage need separate planning and may require more fabric.
