Binding calculator
Find your strip count and fabric yardage for a beautifully finished edge.
How we plan your binding
For straight-grain binding, we add your extra allowance to the quilt perimeter. The first strip contributes its full usable width; every additional strip contributes usable width minus your join loss. Fabric length is strip count multiplied by strip width.
Perimeter = 2 × (quilt width + quilt height)
Purchase estimates round up to the next ⅛ yard. Extra allowance covers your corners and joining the binding ends; increase it if your method needs more.

Does this calculator work for bias binding?
It plans straight-grain, width-of-fabric strips. Continuous bias binding and curved-edge projects need a different cutting method; follow your pattern for those.
What fabric width should I enter?
Enter the usable length of each strip after removing selvages and squaring the fabric. Measure after any washing or other preparation you plan to do.
Why are extra length and join loss separate?
Extra length adds room to the quilt's perimeter for your finishing method. Join loss reduces the length contributed by connected strips. The calculator allows for both so the strip count is not based on unjoined fabric alone.
Does the yardage include shrinkage or print matching?
No. It converts the strip count into fabric length and rounds upward to the next 1/8 yard. Add any extra you need for shrinkage, matching a print, or a personal reserve.
